NEWS : ACI continues upward trend in third quarter

The Afrimat Construction Index (ACI), a composite index measuring activity levels within the building and construction sectors, continued its upward trajectory in the third quarter of the year.

Similar to the previous quarter's findings, seven of the ten constituent indicators comprising the index are in positive territory. Notably, three indicators demonstrated significant improvement this quarter:

  • Building Completed, particularly in metropolitan and larger municipalities, increased by 23.3%.

  • Employment in Construction rose by 14.6%.

  • Sales Values of Building Material saw a 5.9% increase.

  • Additional indicators exhibiting substantial quarter-on-quarter improvements included the value of Building Plans Passed, the volume of Building Materials Produced, and construction sector employee remuneration, as reflected in Salaries & Wages – Construction.

However, the latest ACI also presents some challenges.

  • Compared to the third quarter of the previous year, the overall ACI declined by 1.3%, indicating persistent lethargy in construction sector activity. This decline is likely attributable to the ongoing impact of high interest rates, which have led to elevated debt-servicing ratios and a consistent decrease in the real value of credit extension.

  • Furthermore, the residential property market continues to exhibit sluggish performance.
