NEWS: Coastal wetlands are unable to adapt to the rate of sea-level rise and are constrained by infrastructure

Wetlands, precious ecosystems that shield coastlines, safeguard drinking water from saltwater contamination, and nourish diverse wildlife, face a dire threat from the accelerating pace of sea-level rise, driven by global warming. Wetlands have historically adapted to rising sea levels by expanding upward and inland. However, predictions indicate that the waterline will soon shift far too rapidly for wetlands to keep pace. Consequently, future decades may witness the tragic loss of these vital wetland ecosystems. Wetlands along coastlines have historically played valuable roles for people and wildlife, but are now facing the threat of sea-level rise. As temperatures rise, sea levels are rising at an accelerating rate, and wetlands are unable to keep pace by building upward and migrating inland. This is due to human-induced climate change and the burning of fossil fuels, which has warmed the oceans and melted glaciers. Sea levels are now rising at about 10 millimeters per year, and are

PROFILE: Unconventional career - Cuthbert Ngairongwe

What was your 1st career choice in the Built Environment?

Civil Engineering

What motivated you to get into Civil Engineering

Coming from a rural and poor background where we lacked basic services such as roads and access to clean water,I was primarily motivated by the desire to transform lives and livelihoods through the provision of engineering infrastructure

What makes your career journey unconventional?

I have morphed from a pure Civil Engineer to a hybrid Civil Engineer who also practises as a Construction Claims Consultant and Alternative Dispute resolution practitioner.I managed this transition  through studying for a Master of Laws in Construction Law and Arbitration and a post graduate Diploma in International Arbitration.

Give us brief history of your unconventional journey and the experiences you gained along the way

I completed the Master of Laws in Construction Law and Arbitration with Robert Gordon University (UK) in 2017.I decided to study after realizing that there was a paucity of knowledge in construction law and law in general  in the Engineering fraternity although law underpins our day to day activities as Engineers.

I further did a post graduate Diploma in International  Arbitration with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) where I am a Fellow. I have since been involved in a number of  construction mediation, adjudication and arbitration proceedings as party representative.

What is your current role and what are you learning from it?

Civil Engineer/Claims Consultant and ADR Practitioner. I have learnt that there is no mountain too big to climb if you love and are committed to what you do

Looking back, what have been key learning points in your unconventional career?

My unconventional career has further honed my analytical and critical thinking skills.
