PROFILE : My journey to Professional Registration - Innocent Gininda

Innocent Gininda shares his journey to becoming a registered Professional Engineer (PrEng), emphasizing the importance of mentorship, early preparation, and understanding ECSA requirements. He offers advice to aspiring PrEngs, highlighting the value of diverse feedback and a positive mindset.

My journey to becoming a registered Professional Engineer (PrEng) culminated successfully in November 2024. I was fortunate to begin my career at a company with a Commitment and Undertaking (C&U) Agreement with ECSA and a robust mentorship program. This commitment to training engineers to the standard required for Professional Registration provided me with essential resources and a structured path to track my experience against ECSA requirements. Early exposure to these expectations instilled a positive outlook on registration and solidified my desire to achieve this milestone.

My views on Professional Registration have remained consistently positive throughout this journey. Working alongside competent, registered engineers and being led by managers who emphasized professional standards and ethical conduct further reinforced the importance of this accreditation.

Professionally, this journey has had a significant impact. The more I understood ECSA's expectations, the more I recognized the responsibility inherent in engineering practice. This awareness led to a proactive approach in taking ownership of my work and maintaining high diligence.

Personally, limited on-site opportunities presented a challenge. To overcome this, I actively sought out site visits, accompanied other engineers on their trips, and participated in various site activities. This allowed me to gain valuable experience beyond my direct projects.

When compiling my experience for the Engineer's Report (ER) and Technical Experience Report (TER), I found a series of articles by Kim Timm on LinkedIn to be instrumental in understanding how my work aligned with ECSA outcomes.

For those aspiring to embark on this journey, I offer the following advice:

  • Start writing your ER and TER early. Refine the wording as you progress, don't wait for everything to be perfect before beginning.
  • Set deadlines and communicate them to your mentors. This helps maintain accountability.
  • Seek diverse feedback on your reports. Different perspectives will reveal blind spots and areas for improvement.
  • Address imposter syndrome. Recognize that your experience likely meets more outcomes than you initially realize.
  • Maintain a positive mindset. Believe in your potential for success, and let that enthusiasm shine through in your writing.
Remember, focusing on the possibility of achieving your goal will foster a more productive and fulfilling experience.

My name is Innocent Gininda, I graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with a BSc in Civil Engineering.
