Estimates suggest that the cost of Transnet's poor performance on the economy was around R353 billion in 2023. This is despite Transnet's significant competitive advantage over its global peers, with its business dominated by bulk commodity exports that offer lucrative margins.

Based on the Draft Transnet Network Statement released in March of this year, which provides a comprehensive overview of the rail network's condition, there is a substantial task ahead for Transnet to realize its potential.
