CAREERTIP : Kindness is an underrated quality at work

When we experience a sense of security, it instills within us the confidence to extend our focus beyond the immediate necessities of survival. This enables us to embrace a more interconnected and harmonious way of life with those around us. This, in turn, fosters a nurturing and compassionate mindset towards ourselves and others. It strengthens the social bonds that encourage cooperation instead of competition. This collaborative approach is crucial, as those who exhibited kindness and worked cooperatively with one another thrived better than those engaged in conflict and isolation. This phenomenon is aptly captured by the phrase "survival of the kindest."

Kindness has an amazing ability to positively impact both the giver and the receiver. If you want to boost your well-being and find a deeper sense of purpose in your workplace, consider practicing acts of kindness. Here's how you can do it:
  1. Warm Greetings:

    • Slow down when you arrive at the office and greet your colleagues with a warm "good morning" or "hello." Accompany it with a genuine smile.

  2. Considerate Coffee Breaks:

    • When making yourself a cup of tea, extend the courtesy to your colleagues by asking if they'd like one too.

  3. Engaged Listening:

    • When you ask someone "how are you," really listen to their response. Take five minutes to show genuine interest in their well-being.

  4. Helping Hands:

    • Pay attention to your colleagues. If someone seems stressed, under the weather, or struggling with deadlines or staff absences, offer your assistance.

  5. Lunchtime Connections:

    • Dedicate time each week to go out for lunch with colleagues and engage in conversations that aren't work-related.

  6. Appreciation Express:

    • Instead of complaining, take a moment at the end of each meeting to acknowledge the positive contributions of participants. Express appreciation for their listening skills, helpful questions, follow-through, and commitment.

Incorporating these random acts of kindness into your daily routine can create a more positive and connected work environment for you and your colleagues.
