CAREERTIP : Focus on energy management to optimize performance.

In the current hustle culture, time management is frequently seen as the solution to burnout and the key to survival. However, hardhatPROFESSIONALS should shift their focus to the energy they expend rather than solely relying on time management strategies to optimize performance.

Instead of trying to cram every minute of their day, hardhatPROFESSIONALS should prioritize their energy levels. This can be achieved by cultivating awareness, discernment, and making intentional choices.

Awareness

Energy fluctuates. Some forms are intense and driven, while others are more open, free, and vital. The latter type of energy is sustainable and can be derived from activities aligned with one's passions and interests. Engaging in such activities leaves one feeling empowered and expansive.

Discernment

Recognize how your activities influence your energy levels and prioritize those that uplift you. Conversely, identify tasks that deplete your energy. While organizing a closet or budgeting might be draining for you, others may find those activities fulfilling. Eliminating all energy-draining activities may not be feasible, but time management alone cannot resolve a calendar filled with such tasks.

Choices

Making choices is an inherent part of life, and it is impossible to do everything. However, by being mindful and discerning about what we say yes to and what we say no to based on whether they create or deplete our energy, we can increase our chances of creating more energy and satisfaction in our lives.

If you find yourself overwhelmed by negative, energy-draining emotions, it is crucial to recognize the emotional hijack and practice mindful breathing. This involves acknowledging the emotions, focusing on your breath, and continuing to breathe deeply until the emotions subside.
