OPINION: Z83 postal application a hindrance to unemployed youths

Construction Professional Sne Khanyile says government's the Z83 - postal application process is costly and hinders the unemployed youth to join the public sector.

Digital technologies are supposed to level the playing fields. In a country like South Africa where the unemployment rate for our youth is high, adoption of these technologies should therefore be a high priority if we aim to make it easy for our unemployed youths to join the ranks of the employed . One of the obstacles that holds back our youth from joining the ranks of the employed is the Z83 postal application process which is used to apply for vacancies in the Public Sector. This is not just holding back our youth, it is also very costly.

Let's do some calculations…

  • Take an ubër to an internet cafe - R50

  • Print and copy Z83, CV, ID, Driver Licence, qualifications etc. 30 pages… assuming you applying for at least 3 positions 30 x 3 @ R2 per page = R180

  • Take ubër to police station to certify R50

  • Take ubër to post office R50

  • Post 3 application via fast mail @ R30 each = R90

  • Take ubër home R50

  • R50 + R180 + R50 + R50 + R90 + R50 = R470

  • R470 just to apply for 3 positions.

Say you do this on a weekly basis R470 x 4 = R1880 per month.

Where is an unemployed person supposed to get that money?

Government should do away with the Z83 postal applications and make email applications a mandatory option for all Government positions!
