OPINION : How can we make the Construction industry more attractive to GenZ? Zulfa Taibi

In response to the article Less than a 3rd of Gen-Z would consider a career in the built environment Construction Professional Zulfa Taibi shares her hardhatOPINION on what should be done to make the Construction industry more attractive to the GenZ and females.

Please give us a summary of your background

I was one of the first independent black women in the South African construction industry way back in the 1990s, I was also involved in pioneering and lifting the ceiling for black construction companies to be able to tender for work over R100 000.

Thereafter I became the first black director and black woman to become an executive director on a listed construction company’s board. And the list and SCARS GO ON AND ON!!!!

What are your views of the construction industry with respect to its potential to attract females and the Generation - Z

Almost 35 years in this industry..it has become DIRTIER AND MORE DANGEROUS ALL ROUND!!!

I steered my 16 year old daughter away from it with a whip!

How can we make the industry more attractive to females especially from Generation - Z?

  • Equal salaries for women and men on same level with same qualifications
  • Males must be educated to stop harassing woman in the industry and should learn how to behave professionally ( there are the exceptions that are utterly respectful and professional)
  • Woman should be educated to behave professionally (there are the exceptions that are utterly respectful and professional)
  • Working hours for both genders and working conditions should be relooked at …its long..without real rewards and effects family life and health
  • Corruption…racism….a difficult one..I am not black African..nor white..I am a malay woman…we don’t fit in anywhere..even if we deemed black via our constitution..groupings of same race creed and colour is worse than it was in the apartheid era
  • The CONSTRUCTION MAFIA..big problem on sites…they must be dealt with decisively because they have no respect for construction management on site nor the labour just trying to earn a living!
  • The DOP SYSTEM at offices must be stopped. Where on Friday afternoon. Employees are rewarded with free drinks for working ! its bad for health and safety policies and people driving on our streets
  • Dress code for construction..not just PPE …unfortunately..sadly..wearing micro minis and crop tops are not going to get a woman up the corporate ladder..its hard work..boundaries..qualifications
  • Government must spend budgets and roll out work for woman owned businesses and all business.
