NEWS: Coastal wetlands are unable to adapt to the rate of sea-level rise and are constrained by infrastructure

Wetlands, precious ecosystems that shield coastlines, safeguard drinking water from saltwater contamination, and nourish diverse wildlife, face a dire threat from the accelerating pace of sea-level rise, driven by global warming. Wetlands have historically adapted to rising sea levels by expanding upward and inland. However, predictions indicate that the waterline will soon shift far too rapidly for wetlands to keep pace. Consequently, future decades may witness the tragic loss of these vital wetland ecosystems. Wetlands along coastlines have historically played valuable roles for people and wildlife, but are now facing the threat of sea-level rise. Professional Engineering Technologist (Civil) and Candidate Construction Project Manager.

I always thought that registration was only for those working in consulting firms. I held that view until I wanted a change in my career and I could not get many job interviews due to my registration status then.

Have your views on Professional Registration changed since you started this journey?

Yes, they have changed as I have noticed that almost everyone within the sector is required by law to be professionally registered especially if you will be performing in a higher decision-making position.

How has your career been impacted by your Professional Registration journey?

It has been positively impacted because ever since my registration, I had to turn down about three interview call outs and declined one offer of employment. If I was not registered, I doubt I would have been considered. My Professional registration is also playing a huge role even on my current role.

Would you advise Construction/Built Environment Professionals to embark on this journey?

Yes. Everyone should get professionally registered as it is very key and it opens up a lot of opportunities and it also motivates one to always conduct themselves professionally and ethically when doing or performing their work.
