CAREERTIP : Overcome Intimidation to Build Confidence in the workplace

Feeling intimidated by those who appear confident, successful, or intelligent is a common human experience. However, it's crucial to remember that this feeling often stems from our internal anxieties and comparisons rather than the reality of the situation. Intimidation can hinder personal and professional growth by preventing us from seizing opportunities, expressing ourselves, and reaching our full potential. By implementing strategies to overcome intimidation and cultivate self-assurance you can overcome intimidation, build self-confidence, and navigate social interactions with greater ease and authenticity. Remember, the goal is not to be perfect but to embrace your unique strengths and engage with others in a meaningful and fulfilling way. PROFILE : Journey to Professional Registration - Abongile Dyawire

Abongile Dyawire a Built Environment Professional and founder of a Consulting firm specializing in portfolio, programme and project management advisory services shares MY JOURNEY TO PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION.

Please give us a brief summary on your career

I am the first black South African professional to obtain the Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP) certification with the Project Management Institute (PMI).

I am a Built Environment Professional and founder of Myirha Consulting, specialists in portfolio, programme and project management advisory services.

I  hold a Masters degree in Built Environment from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, a Bachelor of Technology (BTech) in Civil Engineering and a National Diploma in Civil Engineering from Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

I am registered with the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) as a Construction Project Manager (PrCPM).

My industry knowledge spans from working in freight logistics, utilities and public sector infrastructural investments and that has better positioned him to lead my consulting firm to success and to positively contribute to the successes of many clients.

What is your current Professional Registration status?

I am a PfMP (PMI), PgMP (PMI), PMP (PMI) and PrCPM (SACPCMP)

What were your views on Professional Registration before your current status?

I have always believed that professional registration is important because it is a form of validation that you have been tried and tested in those areas to positively contribute to the success of clients.

Have your views on Professional Registration changed since you started this journey?

My initial motivation on professional registration was to get a better job and to gain recognition in the industry by other professionals. But I am now motivated  by the mentorship I do for candidates and experienced professionals to  help them grow within the built environment towards their career direction.

Part of the mentorship I do includes:
SACPCMP - PrCPM, PrCMs, Health and Safety Officers, Health and Safety Managers and Health and Safety Agents
PMI - PMP and PgMP

How has your career been impacted by your Professional Registration journey?

The impact has been good because I was able to climb the corporate ladder much faster and also trusted with more challenges. This has helped me a great deal to grow as a professional and develop creative problem solving approaches.

Would you advise Construction/Built Environment Professionals to embark on this journey?

Yes, it is important and not only for the professionals but the entire built environment community. We need to build credibility so that the economy can trust us more with complex challenges.
