Ashok Harridaw a Professional Civil Engineering Technologist tells us about MY JOURNEY TO PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION

Please give us a brief summary on your career to date

I have in excess of 25 years experience in the Civil Engineering industry with my main focus being Road Safety. Undertook numerous projects relating to Traffic and Transportation and am currently responsible for ensuring the road networks within the Ethekwini Municipality are at an acceptable level of service.

What is your current Professional Registration status?

Professional Engineering Technologist: Civil

What were your views on Professional Registration before your current status?

I found the process to be daunting and constantly shelved it until one day when a colleague at the office reminded me that I needed to also focus on myself and take the time needed to get the application done.

Have your views on Professional Registration changed since you started this journey? Please explain.

I always knew that having my PR would be essential if I wanted an upward career path. Views on the registration have not changed

How has your career been impacted by your Professional Registration journey? 

My journey has been good - Immediately after acquiring Pr status, you feel a sense of accomplishment. Together with this, and having your mindset towards maintaining this status, provides you the determination to always do your best.

Would you advise advise Construction/Built Environment Professionals to embark on this journey? 

Most definitely - If the career choice you made allows for advancement while ensuring compliance with industry standards, PR Registration should be a compulsory tick in every graduates box. Furthermore, it allows you the opportunity of expanding your horizons beyond our shores.
