Professional Construction Project Manager (PrCPM) Sudhesan Naicker discusses the significance of balancing workload and individual capacity for success. He shares the his experience where an ambitious attempt to manage two projects simultaneously led to the unfortunate loss of one project due to excessive workload.

In my journey as a hardhatPROFESSIONAL, I encountered a crucial lesson: balancing workload with individual capacity is paramount. I once ambitiously assumed the responsibility of managing two projects simultaneously, exceeding my capabilities. This ill-conceived decision led to a series of unfortunate outcomes, resulting in the disappointing loss of one project under my supervision.

Several factors contributed to this undesirable result, including the lack of a well-structured plan and inadequate resource allocation, both directly attributable to my excessive workload. Despite the disheartening outcome, the experience offered valuable lessons. I gained a deeper understanding of the delicate trade-off between quantity and quality, realizing the importance of careful planning and execution.

Armed with these hard-earned insights, I implemented a rigorous self-evaluation system to ensure my workload remained manageable. This newfound balance had a transformative impact, significantly enhancing both my productivity and the caliber of my deliverables.

Sudhesan Naicker has 22 years of experience, in various civil, mechanical and electrical projects in KZN, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and free state.
