PROFILE: My journey to professional registration - Moosa Mahomed

Moosa Mahomed a Professional Construction Health and Safety Agent shares HIS JOURNEY TO PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION

Please give us a brief summary on your career to date

I have 20 years experience in construction. My career started at Engen Oil refinery, Durban in 1998 in the HSE discipline as a fire/safety watcher, progressing to present day Health and Safety Professional consulting and empowering individuals and organizations to transform their performance and culture.

What is your current Professional Registration status?

Locally I am a Professional Construction Health and Safety Agent (PrCHSA) with SACPCMP and internationally, I am a Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) with the Board of Safety Professionals..

What were your views on Professional Registration before your current status?

I felt Professional Registration was much needed in RSA within the safety fraternity as there were varying standards from different industry VA's that led to confusion and division within the safety profession. A unified body was required to give clear direction as to what deems a safety professional in the country much like the USA which has BCSP and NASP or the likes of IOSH in the UK.

Have your views on Professional Registration changed since you started this journey?

My views have not changed, we still need to embrace and attain professional registration. I believe the processes within our governing bodies like SACPCMP and VA's need refinement. We are still struggling as a nation to convert skilled labour into registered professionals because of poor service delivery, sub-standard methods of engagement used by governing bodies such as SACPCMP and VA's.

How has your career been impacted by your Professional Registration journey?

It has been a frustrating journey for me that had a negative impact for 2 or 3 years. I struggled to practice/earn an income or receive proper guidance I needed to acquire my Professional status.

It took me 6 months to get a mentor which is sad because at the time in 2017 there were just under 100 Safety agents and about 120 or less candidate agents which meant technically it was a no brainer in finding a mentor and that there ample mentors to service the entire group of candidates which could have easily translated to a pass rate of minimum 50% which could have added 50 or so more competent persons to a much needed resource in the country helping BEP organisations to meeting the requirements of the Construction Regulations 2014 but that is not happening.

From 2019 to present we have added less than 20 new safety agents to the registry. I don't believe we as a country don't have people with the required skill set to attain this designation.

Would you advise Construction/Built Environment Professionals to embark on this journey?

Construction/Built Environment Professionals need to embark on a journey towards Professional registration to be globally competitive. Being a value add to any organization requires one to personally invest in themselves.
