INSIGHT : The Built environment is crucial for circularity transition

The transition of the construction sector to circularity is hindered by various factors. The complexity of materials in individual structures, the extended lifespans of both products and buildings, and the challenges associated with overhauling existing construction and demolition practices on a global scale all contribute to this difficulty. Additionally, the prevailing system of codes, policies, and established practices often discourages practices like adaptive reuse, deconstruction, material reuse, and recycling.

A new report from the Center for the Circular Economy concludes that strategies and tools already exist to transition toward circularity in the built environment. The challenge will be to capitalize on these strategies and break the grip of incumbent practices quickly and efficiently.
