REVIEW: Can Nigeria's coastal highway drive economic transformation?

The construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, a 700-kilometer infrastructure endeavor, is a significant milestone for economic and infrastructural growth in Nigeria. This highway aims to connect Lagos State to Cross River State by passing through the coastal states of Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.

The project has elicited a range of opinions within civil society and policy circles, as is common with major initiatives.here are some of the questions raised.

Is this highway capable of catalyzing Nigeria's economic and infrastructural metamorphosis?

Upon completion, the Lagos - Calabar Coastal Highway Project will offer improved trade, tourism, and commerce prospects in the region. It will facilitate seamless connectivity between Lagos and Calabar as well as all intermediate points. This enhanced accessibility is expected to stimulate economic growth along the entire corridor, unlocking the untapped potential of coastal communities and hinterlands alike. Moreover, the project is projected to significantly enhance Nigeria's Logistics Performance Index (LPI). Given its scale and anticipated impact on trade and transport infrastructure, it is estimated that the project could contribute approximately 0.5 to 1.0 points to the LPI upon its completion.

Can the project enhance a population's access to resources and promote trade, leading to overall improvement?

The newly constructed highway is not only enhancing connectivity between nearby regions and the rest of Nigeria but is also stimulating rapid development in previously underserved communities. The improved accessibility is expected to create additional tourism and commercial opportunities, making various industries more economically viable due to the increased connectivity.

Is the project capable of generating employment prospects and promoting both social and economic growth?

Through improved transportation links, the project aims to foster urban growth along its path. Developers will be inspired to pursue mixed-use projects, incorporating office spaces, retail hubs, and residential communities to meet the needs of the expanding population. This will attract businesses, residents, and investors, further enhancing the vibrancy and economic prosperity of the region.
