He offers advice to aspiring PrEngs, highlighting the value of diverse feedback and a positive mindset. My journey to becoming a registered Professional Engineer (PrEng) culminated successfully in November 2024. CAREERTIPS: 5 things unemployed graduates wish employers in the built environment would do.

We asked unemployed Construction/Built Environment graduates what things should potential employers consider to turn the tide around on graduate unemployment.

Create opportunities that are specific to graduates

As recent graduates we still need work experience to be fully effective. When you intentionally create opportunities that are specific to us, you will have realistic expectations of us  that will enable us to learn on the job; carefully follow instructions; grow our skill sets; and ultimately be of high value to your organization.

Stop labeling us as lazy

We are wrongly labeled as a lazy generation with an attitude problem but the truth is we don't have an attitude problem we have a trust problem. We have seen how some employers hire graduates and then spit them out after a short period. This then makes us believe that everyone wants to use us for their own benefits (political, financial etc.) without any consideration of our benefit.

Invest in us

When we get into your organization, invest in our experience and knowledge. Give us responsibilities that will have a great impact in our career growth. You know what it will take to have our careers boosted, train us, support our progress and ensure that you follow up on our progress.

Pay us market related salaries

There is a wrong perception that we are more interested in money than career growth. When you treat us fair and pay us market related salaries you will realize we are driven by our career progression and not money.

Give international graduates equal opportunities

Due to circumstances beyond our control some of us find ourselves in a country not of our birth nevertheless it is the only country we know and where we studied but we still feel discriminate against when seeking employment  opportunities even with South African citizenship.
