COMMENTARY: The South African building construction sector is bleeding

The South African building construction industry is facing a potential collapse due to shrinking margins, unfair practices, and rampant delays or outright refusal to pay subcontractors. Please give us a brief summary on your career to date 

I am a Construction Project Manager and a Quantity Surveyor by profession. I've worked on various projects as a consultant and/or for the contractor. In my 9 years experience of working, I've worked in building projects, civil, mining and also being an academic. I possess a master's degree in Quantity Surveying and am currently pursuing PhD in the same field.
What is your current Professional Registration status?

I'm a registered Professional Construction Project Manager (PrCPM) and currently working towards PrQS registration.

What were your views on Professional Registration before your current status?

Since my undergraduate years, I've always aimed to become a registered personnel. One of the reasons was that I wanted to be an independent consultant who's highly respected in the industry through my contributions.

Have your views on Professional Registration changed since you started this journey?

Yes, it has indeed changed with time. I realized that attaining the professional status is not the end of the journey, but in fact it is the beginning of it all. You're expected to maintain the status through continuous development and to abide by the rules and conducts of the council.
How has your career been impacted by your Professional Registration journey?

The process itself was time consuming but had a lot of lessons in it. For instance, report writing was one of the tasks that really helped me to reflect on how I work on a daily basis. So one does feel the sense of belonging once attained the professional registration. Therefore, I am accountable to my profession through my services and conduct.

Would you advise Construction/Built Environment Professionals to embark on this journey?

Yes, I believe it should be a goal for every built environment professional to register with their respective councils. An individual who is not accountable to anyone but him/herself is not only dangerous to the clients but to the profession at large.
